Reddit Insights
4 threads · r/ScienceBasedParenting, r/Parenting, r/CPST, r/dadditParents appreciate the RideSafer Gen 5 XS vest for its portability and safety certification but emphasize that it requires a mature, compliant child to be used safely, and it cannot be used on airplanes.
The product is valued for its convenience and safety features, but concerns about child behavior, installation complexity, and airplane restrictions temper enthusiasm.

Watch Out For
Community Q&A
- Is the RideSafer vest as safe as a forward-facing car seat?
- It passes the same crash testing (FMVSS 213) but depends heavily on proper use and a child's ability to stay in position.
- Can the RideSafer vest be used on an airplane?
- No, it is not FAA-approved for use on planes; use a CARES harness or a conventional car seat instead.
- What is the minimum age/weight for the XS size?
- Marketed for 2 years and 26.5 lbs, but the CPST community recommends closer to 3-4 years for maturity reasons.
- Is the vest hard to install?
- Yes, there is a learning curve; practicing at home beforehand is recommended.
Compared To
vs WAYB Pico
WAYB Pico is heavier and bulkier but offers a more traditional harnessed seat feel; RideSafer is much lighter and packable.
vs Cosco Scenera Next
The Cosco Scenera is a cheap, lightweight traditional car seat that can be used on planes; RideSafer vest is even more portable but lacks airplane approval.
vs CARES harness
CARES harness is FAA-approved for planes but only for children over 40 lbs; RideSafer vest cannot be used on planes.

Safety comparison of RideSafer Travel Vest to forward-facing harness
The RSTV passes FMVSS 213 testing just like all other car seats in the United States... It meets or exceeds all crash test requirements and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for harness restraints... However, crash test dummies don't move. In deciding whether or not your child is ready for the vest, you have to be honest about her behavior and developmental level.

Parent experiences using RideSafer vest with a 3-year-old for travel
We used the RideSafer vest for our 3yo on a recent trip... It was great for quick taxi rides, but definitely not for a child who won't sit still. I wouldn't use it for a kid who slumps or tries to unbuckle. Also, it's not approved for planes, so we still needed a car seat for the flight.

CPST first-hand trial of RideSafer XS in NYC taxi scenario
Trying out the RideSafer vest XS. We're NYC so lots of taxis. Definitely a learning curve with threading the belt. Once on, felt secure, but want to practice more before relying on it. Good for occasional use, but I wouldn't use it for daily drives.

Dad's perspective on travel car seats and comparison to RideSafer
What's the deal with these travel car seats? I'm looking at the RideSafer vest vs the WAYB Pico... The vest is lighter and cheaper, but I'm worried my kid will just unbuckle it. And it takes practice to set up. Might just go with the Cosco Scenera for the plane and a cheap booster for the destination.
