New RideSafer Gen 5 Extra Small Portable Car Seat (XS - Blue)
The New RideSafer Gen 5 Extra Small Portable Car Seat (XS - Blue) is a vest-type child restraint system (belt-positioning device) designed for children approximately 2 years and older, weighing 26.5–40 lb and measuring 30–45 in tall. It is certified under FMVSS 213 for use in motor vehicles and requires a lap-and-shoulder belt or lap belt with top tether. Primary use cases include travel in taxis, rideshares, rental cars, and fitting three children across a vehicle seat; it is not FAA approved for aircraft. The vest is ultra-lightweight and portable, with adjustable harness straps and a central buckle. Reddit community feedback indicates that while convenient, the vest is not equivalent in safety to a forward-facing harnessed car seat, especially for sleeping children, and proper fit and top tether use are critical for optimal safety.

Reddit Insights
5 threads · r/ScienceBasedParenting, r/CPST, r/Parenting, r/toddlertips, r/HerOneBagParents view the RideSafer Travel Vest as a convenient but less-safe alternative to a traditional car seat for travel and occasional use, with mixed opinions on its suitability for toddlers (age 2-3) and emphasis on proper fit and the top tether for safety.
Overall sentiment is mixed, with many seeing it as a practical travel solution but acknowledging safety trade-offs, especially for very young children in the XS size. Positive for travel convenience, negative for daily use and toddler fit.

Watch Out For
Community Q&A
- Is the RideSafer Travel Vest as safe as a forward-facing car seat?
- Not equivalent; it's a belt-positioning device. It passes safety standards but does not provide the same side-impact or sleep support as a harnessed seat. Using the top tether improves safety.
- At what age can I start using the RideSafer XS vest?
- Manufacturer says 2 years, but many CPSTs and parents recommend waiting until at least 4 or 5 due to maturity and fit issues. For 2-3 year olds, a rear-facing convertible is still safer.
- Is the RideSafer vest easy to install in a taxi?
- Yes, once you learn it. There's a learning curve, but after practice it's quick to buckle and attach the tether if available.
Compared To
vs Traditional forward-facing harnessed car seat
A car seat is considered safer but the vest is more portable. Some parents would prefer a car seat for daily use and longer trips.
vs BubbleBum inflatable booster
One commenter found the BubbleBum less effective at positioning the belt safely compared to the RideSafer vest, especially for younger/smaller kids.

Comparing RideSafer vest safety to forward-facing car seat
The RideSafer vest is not equivalent to a forward facing car seat... it's a belt positioning device... it's comparable to a booster seat but with a tether... it doesn't provide side impact protection or contain a sleeping child. But it's better than nothing when you can't use a car seat. From CPST: 'It's not as safe as a harnessed car seat, but is a great option when a car seat or booster isn't possible.'

Experience trying the RideSafer XS vest in NYC taxis
Trying out the RideSafer vest XS! We're NYC so no car... we needed something for taxis/Ubers. It's definitely a learning curve to get it fast but now it's quick. I like the tether. My kid is 2.5, 27lbs, and I feel comfortable using it for short rides.

RideSafer vest for travel with a 3-year-old
Get a RideSafer vest, they’re great. Not as safe as a car seat (obviously) but for me the convenience is worth it... I wouldn’t use it to replace a car seat for longer trips at his age but for quick trips on vacation it’s amazing. Also: The size is based on fit, but my daughter started at 4.5.

Review of RideSafer vest for a toddler
Also like the ride safer vest. FWIW, bubble bum did not work well for us... did not position my kids or the belt as safely. Highly recommend this for short trips where you don’t want to bring a huge car seat. I also have one and it helped a lot when traveling. I bought it on FB marketplace.

RideSafer vest as a one-bag travel solution
I used the RideSafer vest for my 4yo... It's a belt-positioning booster that packs small. I also have one for my 5.5yo. My kids sit ok in them but they do slump if they fall asleep, so I make sure to install the top tether. The learning curve is real but after some practice it’s easy.
