We have the Summer Infant hands free gate. It's great when your hands are full, just step on the pedal. But after a year the pedal started to stick and now it's completely broken. Also the auto close is loud if you let it slam.

Not recommended for top of stairs
Don't use pressure mounted gates at the top of stairs, including the Summer one. Get a hardware mounted gate. I learned the hard way when my son leaned on it and it gave way. Luckily he wasn't hurt but it was scary.

Retractable gates vs foot pedal gates
I have both a retractable gate and a Summer Infant foot pedal gate. The Summer gate is great for high traffic areas, but the retractable is better for stairs because there's no bar to trip over. However, the retractable is slower to open and close.

The Summer hands free gate was a nightmare to install on our uneven baseboards. The pressure mounts don't swivel so it never felt truly secured. We returned it and got a different brand.
