Watch Out For
Community Q&A
- Is the RideSafer Travel Vest as safe as a forward-facing harnessed car seat?
- When used with the top tether, it passes the same crash testing as harnessed seats, but behavior and position maintenance are critical. Many users and CPSTs consider it very safe if used correctly, but not identical due to potential for movement.
- Can a 3-year-old use the RideSafer vest safely?
- Technically yes if they meet size minimums, but most parents and CPSTs advise waiting until closer to 5 unless the child is exceptionally calm, as 3-year-olds may wiggle out of position.
- Is the vest allowed in ride share vehicles and taxis?
- Yes, it's legal and commonly used in ride shares and taxis, especially in cities like NYC, as long as it's properly fitted.

Safety comparison of RideSafer vest to forward-facing harness with top tether
The RideSafer vest with the top tether passes the same crash testing as a forward-facing harnessed seat, so in terms of those numbers, it is just as safe. The main concern is that a wiggly child could get out of position, which wouldn't happen in a 5-point harness. So it depends on the child.

Using the RideSafer vest for a 3-year-old during travel
We used it with our 3yo on a trip. She's 38 inches and 32 lbs. She did great, but we practiced at home first. I wouldn't trust a wiggly kid in it, but for a calm 3yo it can work. Much easier than lugging a car seat through the airport.

Concerns about the RideSafer vest for a 2.5-year-old
My almost 2.5 year old is a runner and a climber. I bought the vest and tried it in our car—she undid the chest clip in 5 seconds. There's no way I'd trust her in a taxi with this. Returning it. Maybe when she's older.

CPST review of XS RideSafer vest for NYC urban use
As a CPST, I get asked about this a lot. For NYC families, it's a good option if you need a portable solution for taxis/ubers. I recommend the small over the XS for most 3-4 year olds. The XS is very narrow and fits a limited range. MUST use tether.

Legal use of RideSafer vests in ride shares for Bay Area parents
Yes, you can use them in Ubers and Lyfts. My friend uses it for her 5yo in the city and it's a lifesaver. Just make sure you have the tether and practice a few times at home. It's not as easy as a booster but way more portable.
