RideSafer Travel Vest Gen 5 (X-Small / Black)
The RideSafer Travel Vest Gen 5 (X-Small/Black) is a vest-style child restraint system that positions the vehicle's seat belt over the child's body rather than using a built-in harness, designed for children weighing 30-60 pounds (approximately ages 3 and up). It is intended for travel use in taxis, rideshares, rental cars, and carpools where a permanent car seat is impractical, but it is not FAA-approved for use on airplanes. Certified to FMVSS 213 standards and legal in all 50 U.S. states, the vest is lightweight and portable, though it lacks side-impact protection and requires a child mature enough to sit upright; expert reviews note that achieving a proper fit on smaller children can be challenging and recommend practice before first use.

Great, trustworthy experience
Great deals, easy checkout with lots of payment options, shipped very quickly, and everything was packed well and looked exactly as it was described! I didn't end up needing any intervention with my shipping experience but appreciate the option to cover lost packages for a minimal fee, especially as we get into the late and lost package holiday season. I'll definitely be getting more of my baby gear from Kidsy.
Reddit Insights
6 threads · r/ScienceBasedParenting, r/toddlertips, r/HerOneBag, r/Parenting, r/toddlers, r/CPSTOverall, the RideSafer Travel Vest is praised for its travel portability and convenience, but CPSTs and safety-conscious parents raise concerns about fit, side-impact protection, and appropriateness for children under booster-ready age.
While many users highly recommend the vest for travel and occasional use, significant cautions from CPSTs and some parents about safety, fit, and legality lead to a mixed reception with a slight positive lean.

- Families without a car who occasionally need rides
- Carpooling or as a backup booster for older children
Watch Out For
Community Q&A
- Is the RideSafer vest safe for young children?
- It meets US crash-test standards, but CPSTs generally recommend it for booster-ready children (around age 5+, 40+ lbs) who can sit still, as it lacks side-impact protection and can be difficult to fit on smaller kids.
- Can I use it on an airplane?
- No, it is not FAA-approved for aircraft; use a CARES harness or a car seat on the plane, and the vest for ground transportation.
- How does it compare to bringing a car seat for travel?
- It is much lighter and more portable, ideal for hopping in and out of vehicles, but provides less side-impact protection and may be trickier to adjust; some parents prefer a lightweight car seat for younger children.
- Is it legal to use in other countries?
- It is legal in the US, but not in Australia; requires a prescription in Canada; and may not meet EU/UK standards. Always check local car seat laws before travel.
Compared To
vs Traveling with a traditional car seat (e.g., Cosco Scenera)
The vest offers superior portability and quick setup for taxis, but some parents prefer a dedicated lightweight car seat for younger children due to comfort and ease of use.

Long-term travel use and booster transition
Anecdote coming: we’ve had a RideSafer for travel for years (it’s the only safe lightweight option for under 40lbs). Previously, we found ourselves in bad car seat situations—one dubious rental seat and one incidence of the plane’s baggage compartment getting frozen shut. It’s been a totally worthwhile purchase. We’ve even used it as an extra booster as she got older and started riding in cars with friends. There is a head positioner part that might be good for a wiggly kid. I still wouldn’t use the vest instead of a car seat permanently, only because it is more annoying to set up.

Travel system combining CARES harness and RideSafer vest
We have developed an awesome and convenient travel system with this. We use the CARES harness on the plane (FAA approved) and the Ride Safer vest in Ubers while traveling. It all packs down into a backpack pocket and is so so SO much better than traveling with a car seat. The Ride Safer is very convenient to use in quickly getting into and out of vehicles. It's super easy to carry around with you. But it isn't as comfortable as a traditional carseat. My son tolerates it but prefers a car seat when one is available.

Legality and safety concerns for UK/EU travel
I looked into this and as far as I can understand essentially you were able to use it in the UK with a booster seat because you could have used a booster seat alone (the legal limit to use a booster seat is far smaller than recommended as safe). It has specifically not been certified as safe by the EU or the UK, and personally I wouldn't feel it was safe, nor would I trust that the police would be ok with it if stopped.

Decided against vest, opted for Cosco car seat instead
I was looking into one for our kiddo for our trip to Mexico. Decided against. It just made me too nervous. We bought a cheap cosco car seat. We bought a cheap attachment to attach to our suitcases, to help carry around. Besides, it’s expensive, compared to the light weight cosco seat we bought for travel.

Concerns about impact protection and fit for small children
It doesn’t offer any impact protection, which would be a concern for me, and if your child isn’t large enough to sit correctly in the seat I fail to see how this would be wise (boosters and car seat fit is not just about the straps, it’s also about making sure that the child is against the seat and the seat meets the leg correctly). It appears it would be VERY hard to get a safe fit on many kids (especially the younger/smaller ones).
