The RideSafer Gen 5 is a lightweight, portable vest-type child restraint system (booster alternative) designed for travel and occasional use, not as a primary daily car seat. It is FMVSS 213 certified and uses the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt to secure the child, with an optional top tether for added stability. The Large size fits children weighing 50–80 lbs (approximately 3 years and up) and features neon yellow high-visibility fabric, adjustable straps, and a compact design that allows three seats across most vehicles.

Watch Out For

mediumNot approved for use on airplanes; requires a CARES harness for air travel if child is under 40 lbs.
highChildren may slump when sleeping, potentially leading to unsafe positioning.
lowLow seat position prevents kids from seeing out the window, which can be a source of complaints.
lowOptional headrest is more trouble than it's worth according to some reviewers.
mediumSizing can be tricky; even with improved adjustability in Gen 5, the vest may not fit all slim or small children properly.

Community Q&A

Is the RideSafer Travel Vest as safe as a forward-facing car seat?
It meets FMVSS 213 standards but is recommended as a secondary travel option, not a daily car seat replacement.
Can a 3-year-old use the RideSafer vest?
Technically yes with the top tether, but many parents are uncomfortable using it for such young children.
How difficult is it to install and adjust?
It takes practice to get the belt fit right, and the velcro adjustment can be finicky.
Is the RideSafer vest comfortable for kids?
Mixed reviews; kids may complain about lack of window view, difficulty sleeping, and general discomfort on long trips.

Compared To

vs Traditional forward-facing harnessed car seat

The RideSafer is not considered as safe for daily use, especially for younger children, but is a practical travel alternative.

vs CARES harness

The RideSafer is more secure than a CARES harness but cannot be used on airplanes.

vs Traditional booster seat

Provides better positioning for young kids than a booster, but low seat height prevents seeing out window; optional Travel Smarter booster can lift them.

  • Safety comparison of RideSafer travel vest to forward-facing harnessed seats

The RideSafer is basically just a seatbelt guide that holds the belt in the proper position and helps keep the child from sliding around. It doesn't do a particularly good job of absorbing crash forces, though it is better than a backless booster. If you're going to be doing a lot of driving with a child, get a real seat. For the occasional taxi ride, the RideSafer is a good solution.

  • RideSafer vest for travel with a 3-year-old

We just used the Ride Safer vest for a trip to Europe with our 3.5 year old and it was absolutely perfect. He's very tall for his age so he fit the size small without any issues. I know it says minimum age 3 but I personally wouldn't use it for a young or petite 3 year old. [... ] We used the top tether 100% of the time, and I think it's a must for younger kids to prevent slumping and submarining.

  • Review and tips for using the RideSafer travel vest for one-bag travel

I used the RideSafer Travel Vest for my 4 year old on a recent trip and it was a game changer. I will say it takes a minute to figure out how to get everything adjusted correctly. The first couple of times I used it, it felt like wrestling a greased pig. Once you get the hang of it, it's easy-peasy.

  • General discussion on travel car seats, including RideSafer

The RideSafers are great travel car seats, but I wouldn't recommend them as daily drivers, particularly not for a 3-year-old. That's the extreme low end of their age range. They're not really as safe as convertibles [... ] And our kids hate them: they're low to the seat so you can't see out the window, and it's virtually impossible to nap in them since they provide no support (and they're really not meant to; a sleeping kid in a RideSafer can easily end up mispositioned in a way that's unsafe).
