The Ride Safer Travel Vest Gen 5 (Small) is a vest-style child restraint that uses the vehicle's seat belt to secure the child, certified to FMVSS 213 and legal in all 50 states. It is lightweight and portable, designed for travel, rideshares, and situations where a full car seat is impractical. Community Q&A

Is the RideSafer Travel Vest as safe as a forward-facing car seat?
The vest passes FMVSS 213 testing but lacks side impact protection and depends on child positioning; many CPSTs consider it less safe, especially without the tether.
Can a 3-year-old use the RideSafer vest?
The XS size is rated for 2+ years, but many parents and experts warn against use for young toddlers due to wiggling and inability to stay positioned correctly.
Is the vest allowed in Uber/Lyft?
Yes, but some drivers may be unfamiliar with it and refuse; parents should be prepared to explain its use.

Compared To

vs Traditional forward-facing car seat

The vest is seen as less safe than a harnessed seat, especially without the top tether, and many CPSTs recommend it only for older children who meet booster readiness.

vs Travel car seats (e.g., Cosco Scenera Next)

Some parents consider lightweight travel car seats as safer alternatives, though less convenient than the vest.

  • Safety comparison of RideSafer vest to forward-facing car seat

It is not as safe as a forward-facing harnessed seat. It is a travel vest that is only useful if you literally cannot bring a traditional car seat. It doesn't have side impact protection or a 5-point harness. In order to be used safely, the child has to sit properly 100% of the time. Cannot slump, lean, or wiggle out of position. The top tether is absolutely required to pass the same safety standards as a forward-facing harnessed seat, but even then it's not as safe.

  • Parent seeking travel vest advice for 3-year-old

We have a 3.5 yo and used it for a trip where we were going to be in taxis. It was okay. Our main issue was that our kid is a wiggle worm and would not sit still. It was very hard to get a good fit. We ended up having to lock the seatbelt to keep her in place. We would not use it again until she is older and can sit still. It's a good concept but not great for young toddlers.

  • Toddler parent question about Ride Safe vest

We have the Gen 5 and use it for my 4.5 year old when we travel. It’s so much easier than lugging a car seat through the airport. She does really well in it but I’d say 4 is the absolute minimum. The younger they are the more likely they are to mess with the belt. I also highly recommend the top tether and the optional crotch strap. It makes it way more secure. Overall really happy with it for our use case.

  • CPST feedback on RideSafer vest XS for NYC use

I'm a CPST and I generally don't recommend the vest for kids under 5. Yes the XS technically fits a 2 year old but it's not developmentally appropriate. They can't sit still enough. Even with the tether, there is no side impact protection. It's really meant for older booster-ready kids who need something portable. In NYC I'd recommend a lightweight car seat like the Cosco Scenera Next for a 2 year old over this.

  • Bay Area parent asks about RideSafer vest in rideshares

I used it once in an Uber and the driver almost refused because he thought it wasn't a real car seat. I had to show him the manual and the NHTSA letter. It worked fine but it was a hassle. Also, most Ubers don't have top tether anchors so you lose that safety feature. I'd only use it again if I had no other option.
