Community Q&A

Is the Jolly Jumper bad for my baby's development?
Most parents and some pediatricians say it's fine in moderation (10-20 minutes a day), but some physical therapists advise against it due to risks of poor posture, toe-walking, and delayed motor skills.
At what age can I start using the Jolly Jumper?
Recommendations generally suggest waiting until 4-6 months when the baby has good head and neck control, and ensuring feet are flat on the floor.

  • Mixed opinions on developmental safety of Jolly Jumper

So long as their feet are flat on the floor it's ok to use for short periods of time... Extended use of these items can cause problems but if you just use it for small periods each time then it's fine. I believe that the jolly jumper actually comes with a warning not to use for longer than 15mins anyway. ... she told me not to use it at all because of all the negative effects it has on development. She says they see a lot of children with feet problems especially as they spend so much time jumping on their toes. ... I've used them and walkers for my children never had any problems. The issues arise when children are left in them for ages. Ten minutes a day max is what I stick with.

  • Physical therapist warns about core strength issues

She said the concern for it is when the babies arch their back too much jumping they increase the muscle tone in their back more than their core which throws off their necessary core strength development at this age. ... Our pediatrician said to just not leave them in it all day and it’s fine for hips and any other concerns.

  • Strong recommendation for Jolly Jumper as entertainment

Yes i very very very much recommend it. Omg its amazing. Super safe in my opinion. Lots of padding. Super easy to put in any doorway. I honeatly dont know what i would do w.o. it. ... I think the jolly jumper is much better at tiring Stella out. And we put music on and she just goes nuts. Like freedom.

  • Guidelines on age and usage from parents

My kids were insanely early in those things so around 4ish months we used it. I wouldnt feel comfortable until closer to 6 months with most. ... Limited to about 15 minutes a day or until baby gets tired and starts to slump ... She also suggested that for however long you keep babe in the JJ, that you should double the floor/tummy time after. ... I bought it second hand for $40. She started using it properly at around six months. ... I expect her to use it until about a year. So I would say that it lasts about six months.

  • Jolly Jumper benefits for baby with cerebral palsy

My 10 month old with CP loves his jolly jumper! He has low muscle tone and the jolly jumper gives him the opportunity to work on standing and bearing weight through his legs in a supported way. His physical therapist actually recommended it.

  • Comparison with activity center jumpers and safety concerns

Its super different then the excersaucer. I think the jolly jumper is much better at tiring Stella out. ... I find that is more for learning then exercise. ... I did so much research on jolly jumpers ... The only issues I could really find on government websites were about either the clamp coming undone and the baby falling or older children pushing the baby into the door frames... Nothing about feet. ... She started choking on her saliva.. i guess as she was jumping some went into her trachea. Needless to say her parents didn't put her back in the jj again.
