Reddit Insights
6 threads · r/NewParents, r/beyondthebump, r/BabyBumpsReddit parents have mixed feelings about the Fisher-Price Sit-Me-Up Floor Seat: some find it useful for short, supervised containment, while others caution about potential hip issues and limited use window.
Opinions are divided: some parents and a physical therapist recommend the seat for moderate use, praising its ability to keep baby upright and entertained, while others cite hip development concerns, quick outgrowing, and tipping risks.
Themes
Use Cases
- Keeping baby contained while parent uses bathroom or does chores
- Giving baby a way to see the world upright
- Feeding first solid foods
- Providing a play station with attached toys
Watch Out For
Community Q&A
- Is the Fisher-Price Sit-Me-Up safe for my baby's hips and spine?
- Many physical therapists say it's okay for short, supervised sessions (under 20 min) and with modifications like a rolled blanket under the seat to improve posture.
- At what age can I start using the Sit-Me-Up?
- Most parents start around 3-4 months when the baby has good head control, but some advise waiting until closer to 6 months for spinal readiness.
- Does the seat help my baby learn to sit independently?
- Containers generally don't teach sitting; they are for containment. Floor time is more effective for building core muscles.
- How long can I leave my baby in the seat?
- Recommendations are typically no more than 20-30 minutes at a time, and limited total container time per day.
- Will my chunky baby fit in the seat?
- Some parents with larger babies found the seat too tight and had to stop using it by 3-4 months.
Compared To
vs UpSeat
Some parents and physical therapists prefer the UpSeat for better ergonomics and hip support, but the Fisher-Price seat is often considered a viable budget-friendly alternative with proper moderation.
vs Bumbo
The Bumbo is frequently criticized for poor hip positioning; the Fisher-Price Sit-Me-Up is seen as a safer alternative due to its sling-style seat and better hip/leg positioning.
vs Baby Bjorn Bouncer
Some parents find bouncers more versatile and longer-lasting, but the sit-me-up offers an upright position that bouncers don't provide once baby outgrows them.

PT recommends Fisher Price Sit-Me-Up for moderate use
They have some other types that keep the baby’s hips/legs positioned better than the bumbo. My sister is a PT and she did some research for me and found one that she said was good for use in moderation. I think it’s Fisher Price. Edit: yes, it’s the Fisher Price Sit-Me-Up Floor Seat. Approved by at least one real physical therapist for moderate use. Lol.

Parent loved sit-me-up for contained playtime and toys
Apple_Crisp: 'We loved our sit me up! We used it from about 3 months when he could hold his head up until sometime after 6 months when he was sitting on his own and stable. We only used it for like 20 min max at a time and did lots of floor time, but it helped my son as he wanted to see everything and it was better than lying him on the floor in the bathroom.' hellogirlscoutcookie: 'They love the FP sit me up chair though with toys attached.'

PT recommends seat for posture; parent used for feeding
weddingthrow27: 'This is the one that was recommended to me by a physical therapist for correct back/hip position and to encourage them learning to sit independently! Only for moderate use of course, no container is good for frequent use.' cherrypkeaten: 'Yeah, there are a million on Marketplace! He liked just watching us in it and we gave him his first bites of oatmeal and stuff in it.'

Caution on early use, tipping risk, and limited lifespan
I would wait on the sit me up until baby is closer to 6 months old. It’s not good for their hips or spine to be propped in a sitting position until they’re closer to that age. Personally I would skip it all together. We got one for free secondhand and only used it a handful of times with both babies because they learned how to knock themselves over in it pretty quick.

Short-term use with posture modifications okay per some PTs
I have the sit me up seat too. I’ve seen some physical therapists say it’s not the worst option. You can put a rolled up blanket under the seat to fix their posture. They recommend reclined baby bouncers until about 6 months. I have not personally talked to a physical therapist and this is also what I just see online. I personally use the sit me up seat. Mainly for appt’s to keep my crazy crawler contained for a few minutes.

Baby outgrew seat quickly due to larger size
My baby was 15lbs at 8 weeks. I had the sit me up from my registry and tried to put him in it around 3-4 months (yeah, they need good neck control and ability to not flop around). He didn’t fit in it and I had to pry him out 😭. I was sad.
