New Clek Foonf Convertible Car Seat with Rigid Latch System (Edge Ziip)
The Clek Foonf is a convertible car seat designed for rear-facing (14–50 lbs) and forward-facing (26.5–65 lbs) use, featuring a steel-and-magnesium sub-structure, Rigid-LATCH system, anti-rebound bar, and REACT energy-absorbing crumple technology. It measures 16.9 inches wide, has a 9-year lifespan, and uses machine-washable, flame-retardant-free, PFAS-free Ziip fabric covers. The seat is recommended for its advanced crash protection and narrow fit for three-across installations, though user reviews note it is heavy (38 lbs rear-facing) and may require careful installation for optimal comfort.

Built like a tank! Helicopter Grandma approved.
I had to replace my other carseat of a different brand (also excellent quality, but huge) with a narrow car seat to fit 3 across in my Tesla. I did tons of research and the Foonf was my number one choice for safest seat. I'm an older woman, grandma, and installed it myself. I will say it was a bit challenging, but now that I've done it once, I don't think it would be quite so hard to install it again. I used the latch and the seatbelt method and that seat isn't going anywhere. I scored the marshmallow color that's on clearance and it is stunning with my white seats! I did make one mistake possibly and that's not having my granddaughter with me to adjust the shoulder straps before I installed the seat. If I really have to find a negative, it's that I will hate it if I have to uninstall the seat and adjust those straps. The other seat I had was simple to adjust by raising the backrest and the straps raised along with it. All in all, I feel like I made the right choice for safety and as a bonus, it's beautiful.
8 Year Review - Excellent
Our first child is now nine years old, and we used the Foonf for eight years right up to the expiration (and outgrowing it). The Foonf is excellent. We've since had two more kids, and each got a Foonf after outgrowing the infant car seat. Eldest kid sat in that seat at least 100k miles, and it still looks new. The fabric is incredibly durable, easy to keep clean, and very stain resistant the few times it was tested. Other parents we know have gone through multiple car seats for their kids, and probably ended up spending more than a single Foonf which lasted us the entire time. It's a shame the expiration period is what is is, because this seat looked like it could serve another kid for eight more years no problem, and I would have been happy to pass it on for re-use. We fit three-across in a 2014 BMW 3-series. It's a tight fit, but it worked. We had to ditch the cup thingeys, cut a notch in the seat protector to make the seatbelt access easier, and also we lost being able to use the Latch system on the two outboard seats, so make sure you have ratcheting seatbelts in all three positions (our truck, sadly, did not have that in the middle seat, which I didn't know about before having kids). So, what didn't we like? 1. The way the seat belt passes through the rear is the same area where a latch on the harness splits off, which can get stuck on the seatbelt, preventing tightening. Once we figured out the issue, it might take a loosening-tightening cycle or two to get it to clear, but it could easily be solved if there was a plastic divider that kept the two belts in separate compartments. You won't have this problem until you have to graduate from the Latch to the seatbelt, but it's there waiting for you. 2. We somewhat frequently moved the seats from one vehicle to another. They are heavy, and bulky. And access is tight, especially for three-across in a small vehicle. They are definitely more convenient for a permanent installation. If you need to move the seats on a regular basis, it's a bit of a chore, and you might consider something more portable (or additional seats). Overall conclusion is that we loved this seat (and still have two kids in service in their own!) and were sad to see it get to the expiration date and move to something else. The kids love them too. Thankfully we have never crash tested them, but I trust that they are in the safest place in the car should that happen. If I had to do it all over again, I would buy three more. Pricey - worth every penny.
LOVE!
Absolutely love this seat! I researched car seats for months and kept coming back to Clek. I wasn’t sure it would fit in my 4Runner, so I was a little skeptical to buy since I couldn’t see it in person. Measurements were within 1” of the others I had it narrowed down to, so I went for it. It sits a little closer to the ceiling than I’d like, but baby can see out the window and loves it! It also fits in the middle seat, which I was really hoping for. The only downside is getting baby into the seat with it sitting up so high and the high side walls of the seat. It’s worth it though. Included pictures for any other 4Runner owners. Also for anyone interested in the vintage color, it’s closer to the pictures than the color swabs on the site. I’d say it’s closer to a dusty mauve than a pink. We got a rotating car seat for my husband’s car and aside from the convenience of the rotation, I hate it and baby doesn’t love it. It’s another highly rated, reputable brand, but it feels cheap and flimsy by comparison. Comparing to the Foonf, the Foonf’s clean design left no question about parts or cushion placement. Also, the Clek manual was amazing by comparison.
Worth their weight in gold
My three children were in Clek car seats during an accident where our minivan was tboned and rolled. My two older kids were forward facing in Foonfs. My youngest was rear facing in a Fllo. No one onsite could comprehend how the children were unharmed, particularly my son who was on the side of the impact. my eldest has a small bruise/abrasion on her collarbone where the seatbelt rubbed her bare skin. There is not another mark on them. I will never purchase another brand of car seat. These seats are worth their weight (which is admittedly a lot) in gold and I can't express my gratitude toward this brand enough. Thank you, Clek, for protecting my babies.
Reddit Insights
5 threads · r/toddlers, r/BabyBumpsCanada, r/BuyingforbabyReddit users give mixed feedback on the Clek Foonf: many praise its build quality, safety and narrow side-to-side profile (and like the Ziip washable cover/Infant Thingy), while others complain about weight, cleaning difficulty, installation nuances and occasional child discomfort.
Comments are split: several users strongly praise the Foonf's construction, perceived safety, and narrow fit, while multiple others report negatives (heavy/bulky, hard to clean especially older models, tricky installs in some vehicles, and comfort/head-flop issues for some children).

Use Cases
- Long rear-facing use and road trips
- Using convertible from newborn with Infant Thingy, or starting once baby ≥14 lbs and sitting unassisted
- Side-seat LATCH installs and 3rd-row LATCH for easier access
- Permanent, set-it-and-forget-it install in one vehicle (less ideal for frequent swapping)
Watch Out For
Community Q&A
- Is the Foonf cover machine-washable?
- Newer Foonf models with the 'Ziip' feature have a zip-off/washable cover; older Foonf covers are not machine-washable and are harder to clean.
- Is the Foonf comfortable for kids on long rides?
- Mixed — some children are comfortable on long road trips in a Foonf, others complain of hard/low-profile padding and discomfort on longer rides.
- Is the Foonf easy to install?
- Mixed — users praise the rigid LATCH arms for side-seat installs, but others find it more complicated or finicky to get a consistently tight install versus some competitors.
- Can I use the Foonf from birth?
- You can use it with the Infant Thingy (or P-thingy) for newborn fit; otherwise the seat is often used without the insert once baby meets manufacturer guidance (commonly cited as ~14 lbs and sitting unassisted).
- Will it fit three-across?
- Many users note the Foonf is relatively narrow side-to-side and can work for three-across, but its height and front-to-back depth can be problematic in some vehicles.

Mixed firsthand reports — praised for build/safety; criticized for weight, cleaning and child comfort
We had a Foonf. I loved it (and never found cleaning it to be an issue with the overpriced Foonf sprays), but my daughter (4) always complained that her butt/legs hurt on 15 minute+ car rides. I assumed for a long time that she just didn’t like riding in the car. But then, about 6 months ago, in anticipation of a longer car ride, I tried swapping the seat out for the Britax that my parents use. She didn’t complain once that trip. We have since bought a Britax to replace the Foonf because the difference was so noticeable to her. I have 3 Foonf seats and my kids love them. We have done lots of road trips with zero issues. Also they’re the super easy to clean and the safest on the market. No losing! Never again. Not machine washable, super heavy and a complicated (relative to other seats) install. So we have the Foonf and used it in my husbands truck rear facing, it is very deep. She threw up in it one time and it was HORRID trying to clean it. Because it’s all separate the vomit literally went everywhere and I was cleaning with qtips to try and get it all out of the cracks and crevices. 0/10.

Ziip/washable cover noted; generally praised for build but heavy to move between cars
Being machine washable was a deal breaker for me, too. That's why I went with an Advocate instead of a clek seat for my oldest. That said, I just bought a Foonf with the new Ziip/washable cover, because we have a second kid, and 3rd row access in my car is easier if one uses a LATCH install. I otherwise love my britax. I have a Clek foonf. Love it so much that we bought a second. You get used to it and then install and adjustments are super easy. Their customer service is excellent. The zip off cover is great and equally importantly it’s put together different so the fabric covers fit really snug and secure (the old version we had some fabric slippage at times and snacks would get under the seat and into the lock offs). My babe has always been comfortable in it and we drove from NS to YT. We have the Foonf and Liing and are very happy with them. The seats are solid and well made! The installation for the Foonf is easy once you know how to do it. It's just a heavy car seat so it's not that practical to switch it between cars.

Detailed comparison: Foonf strengths (newborn fit with Infant Thingy, leg room) and caveats (size, reassembly/cleaning, padding)
Other than size, the Foonf is one of my favorite convertible options for newborns. With the Infant Thingy it provides one of the better newborn fits of any convertible seat. It’s not an “easy” seat to install because it’s a bit complicated and has lots of technology packed into it, but it’s not physically difficult to do... Easy to clean: yes *if* you get a Ziip version and/or a P-thingy. My Clek seats are from before the Ziip versions existed but the P-thingy has saved us from accidents and diaper leaks. The Foonf also has excellent leg room for bigger rear facing kids... I had the foonf and sold it to get a Britax. I was installing it in a Kia Carnival. ... The padding is dismal. Even on the most reclined setting I felt like he had no support. His head was always falling forward - and yes this is while RF. I had my husband sell it on FB, and I regret buying it.

Enthusiastic praise for install and perceived safety; big complaints about cleaning and bulk
I LOVED the Clek Foonfs for our girls in our older Toyota Sequoia. They were both rear-facing side by side and still let the drivers seat go back all the way for my partner. Then we turned them forward facing and I loved them even more because those rigid latch arms make them so stinking easy to install!! But I HATE cleaning them. It’s a huge production to uninstall them, drag them out of the car, scrub them with special cleaners, let them dry overnight, and then reinstall them. We have it and are very happy with it. My daughter has been in it for almost a year and when we made the switch she suddenly started enjoying car rides! It's very much a set it and forget it seat apart from adjusting it as she grows. We have the pee thingy, which makes the seat a bit softer.

Timing of switching to Foonf and newborn-use caveats (14 lbs, Infant Thingy)
The Clek Foonf can be used without an infant insert once your baby weighs 14 pounds, so you can start using it as soon as your baby meets that criteria or as late as when he outgrows the Cloud. Our baby has been in a Fllo (with the Infant Thingy) since birth, and it works quite well for us. The criteria is 14 lbs *and* sitting unassisted. Otherwise the infant thingy is still required, even once they surpass 14 lbs. Clek foonf is a very narrow seat side to side but is really tall. So something to keep in mind if you have a sedan or smaller vehicle. To use it with an infant that’s under 14lbs, 25” and cannot sit independently you’ll need to purchase the infant-thingy. It wouldn’t be my first choice honestly. It’s a quirky seat, weighs a lot so you’ll need to use a seatbelt install and doesn’t have a no rethread harness.
