We have the EvenFlo’s as well, we dont travel with them though (way to heavy). We bought BabyTrend’s 3 in 1 trooper. Very basic, but very light car seat. Bought a generic car seat bag on Amazon and have since taken it on multiple trips.

Recommended as a lightweight travel option
The Cosco Scenera Next is the classic lightweight travel seat. The Safety 1st Jive is also good. The Baby Trend Trooper is another lightweight option that a lot of people recommend. We have a Cosco Finale for our 5 year old for travel and it's lightweight enough to carry through the airport.

Comparison with Safety 1st Ellaris for travel
Between the two, I'd pick the Ellaris. It has a higher rear-facing capacity (50 lbs) compared to the Trooper (40 lbs) and a no-rethread harness. The Trooper is lighter for travel but hard to get a good recline and requires a pool noodle.

Rear-facing limit and travel utility
The trooper is a 40 lb rear facing seat. For a 3 year old that’s small, it could work but he won’t rear face for long in it. It’s a great lightweight travel seat though.
