Top of stairs = always hardware mount. Pressure mounts can fail if a kid leans on them hard enough. We have a KidCo Gateway pressure mount in a doorway and it's fine, but I'd never use it at the top of the stairs.

I second the wall mount type if you're using for the top of stairs. Our wall mounted one has been pushed over many times by us/older kid accidentally causing us to fall...can't imagine falling at the top of the stairs! We use our pressure mount one to block the hallway right before the stairs so baby can't get to stairs, we rent as well so we didn't do wall mount on the stairs.
