My mom got me a Calia mat for Christmas, and I'm actually impressed. It's super comfortable and has good cushioning for my knees. The grip is fine for non-heated classes. For $100, I think it's a solid mat.

Calia is not truly non-slip for hot yoga. I tried the Power Grip model and still slipped. If you want a non-slip mat under $100, check out the IUGA Pro or the Heathyoga mat.

I think mat quality matters, but you don't need to spend $100+ as a beginner. I started with a Calia from Dick's and it was fine for learning. Once you get serious, you can upgrade.
