I researched and read reviews... The construction of the gate was very easy to understand but the instructions made it more confusing. Once assembled, it didn't really provide the stability I was looking for... The gate door is VERY narrow. The locking mechanism makes it almost impossible to function one handed with a baby in the others... If you are looking for something for less active children and pets this would be good but not for active children at all!

Top of Stairs Gate Recommendation: Regalo vs. Others
We used regalo gates for top and bottom of stairs with drywall on one side and banister on the other. Installation was a pain, but once they were up they were super sturdy... We got a baby proofer in for a consultation and they said they would have to install a more expensive gate to drill into our metal banister... The babyproofer recommended the Summer Infant gate instead.

Regalo Gates for Top and Bottom of Stairs: Sturdy but Flawed
We have regalo gates for our top and bottom of stairs. They're pretty sturdy, but the latch is a pain. It sticks and I often need two hands to open/close it. Also, the gate is narrow. I'm not a big person and I feel like it's tight to walk through. It is definitely not a one handed operation.
