Community Q&A

Is the RideSafer vest as safe as a forward-facing car seat?
It meets federal safety standards and when used with the top tether, it passes the same testing as a harnessed seat, though crash test dummies don't account for child movement.
Can I use it for a 3-year-old?
Technically yes if they meet the size minimums, but many CPSTs recommend waiting until closer to age 4-5 due to maturity and positioning.
Is it comfortable for long rides?
Some children find it uncomfortable to nap in, and the low seating position can limit window visibility.

Compared To

vs Traditional forward-facing harnessed car seat

Some users argue it's not as safe as a harnessed seat, while others cite it meets federal standards and is equivalent when used with tether.

vs Booster seat

RideSafer is more portable but may not provide side impact protection like a high-back booster.

  • Safety equivalence to forward-facing harness

Looking at the RideSafer travel vest for my 3.5 year old. Is it equivalently safe to a forward facing car seat? I see it’s FMVSS certified, but I’m wondering if in a real crash it would perform as well. Also curious if anyone has crash test data beyond the manufacturer’s claims.

  • Travel vest for a 3-year-old

We are taking a trip and will be in a lot of taxis. My daughter just turned 3, is 30 lbs and 36 inches. Would the RideSafer vest be a good option? I’ve seen some people say it’s better for older kids. Also, any tips for getting a good fit?

  • Ultra-portable travel solution for one-bagging

Has anyone used the RideSafer Travel Vest Gen 5 as part of a one-bag travel setup? I want something that can fit in my backpack or purse for intermittent car rides. Does it really roll up that small? Any issues at airport security?

  • Comfort issues for toddler

Tried the Ride Safe Vest on my 2.5 year old for a short trip. She complained the whole time that she couldn’t see out the window and that the buckle was uncomfortable. Might be better for older kids who don’t need to nap in the car. Also, the shoulder belt guide kept slipping.

  • General feedback and travel hack

We have the RideSafer vest and love it for travel. Took it on a cruise and used it in ports and taxis. Way easier than lugging a car seat. Some Uber drivers were confused but once we showed them they were fine. My only complaint is the crotch strap is a bit short for my tall kid.
