The RideSafer Gen 5 is a vest-style child restraint system (booster category) that secures a child weighing 50–80 lbs (Large size, recommended for ages 3+) using the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt. It is FMVSS 213 certified, ultra-lightweight, and portable, making it suitable for travel, rideshares, taxis, and fitting three children across a vehicle seat. Note: This open-box item is missing the crotch strap, instruction manual, and neck pillow; while safe for occasional use, Reddit reviews indicate it is not ideal for daily driving or sleeping due to comfort and positioning limitations.

Community Q&A

Is the RideSafer Travel Vest as safe as a forward-facing harnessed car seat?
It meets FMVSS 213 standards and, when used with the top tether, provides similar crash-test performance, but some CPSTs and parents are hesitant for younger children.
Can a 3-year-old use the RideSafer?
Technically yes if they meet size minimums, but it's generally not recommended due to maturity and fit concerns; many suggest waiting until at least age 4.
Is the RideSafer comfortable for long trips or sleeping?
No, it offers little support, kids can't rest their head, and it can lead to unsafe slumping when sleeping, making it poor for long drives.
Does the Gen 5 sizing run large or small?
The Gen 5 has improved adjustability over Gen 4, but fit is tricky and the vest must be tried on the child; the small can fit slim 5-year-olds but may be too big for some 3-year-olds.

Compared To

vs Traditional forward-facing harnessed car seats

Some users feel the vest is nearly equivalent in safety when used with top tether, while others feel it's more comparable to a booster and not as safe as a harnessed seat.

vs Traditional booster seats

Many find it more secure and less likely to allow slumping than a backless booster, but it lacks side-impact protection.

vs BubbleBum inflatable booster

One user compared the bubblebum favorably for older kids due to simplicity, but preferred the RideSafer for younger ones.

  • Safety equivalence of RideSafer Travel Vest to forward-facing harness

TL;DR: It's safe. It meets the same crash test standards as any harnessed car seat in the USA (FMVSS 213)... I think the biggest thing to consider is that it's still a booster, and requires the child to be mature enough to sit properly.

  • Using RideSafer vest for travel with a 3-year-old

I’d get the RideSafer. I use it for cabs/ubers when traveling with my 3yo... It’s basically a wearable booster that positions the seatbelt correctly on the child’s body... My 3yo is also big and he fits in the small... It’s also great for 3 across situations.

  • Travel car seats debate and RideSafer comfort issues

We have ridesafer vests. Wouldn't recommend for daily driving. They are super uncomfortable and he can't see out the window... He can't sleep in it... We use them for traveling, carpool, and if we ever needed to drive an extra kid...

  • RideSafer vest as a one-bag travel solution

We have a RideSafer vest for our 5yo and love it. It works well for travel... The Gen 5 has better adjustability... It’s not great for long car rides or napping though... We also have a bubblebum for the 7yo which is simpler but the RideSafer is more secure for the younger one.
