This is a free gate. It's a hardware-mounted wall gate that swings both ways and extends from about 30in to 48in. The latch is a bit stiff but it's solid. I found the installation pretty straightforward but had to shim one side because my wall wasn't perfectly flat.

Recommendation for top of stairs baby gate
We have the Evenflo farmhouse gate and it's very sturdy. But installation was a pain, and ours needs two hands to open half the time. For top of stairs, we actually prefer the Retract-a-Gate because there's no bar to trip over.

Baby gate help needed for tricky staircase
I bought the Evenflo top of stairs gate from Amazon. Once it's installed correctly it's solid and I feel safe with my toddler near it. But getting it installed level and square was harder than the reviews said. The latch works one-handed most times but can stick.
