I’ve seen a few studies and crash test videos, and the consensus seems to be that the RideSafer vest is safer than a backless booster, but not as safe as a high-back booster or harnessed seat. For a 3 year old, I would not use it as a daily driver, but for travel, it’s a reasonable tradeoff. It does a good job at positioning the seatbelt correctly, which is a big part of safety, but it lacks side impact protection. Also, if the child falls asleep, they can slump over and become out of position. The tether helps with that some.

Parent experiences using RideSafer vest for travel with a 3-year-old
We’ve used the RideSafer vest for our 3-year-old on a few trips now. It’s so easy to pack and take through the airport. For a vacation where you’re mostly doing short drives, it’s perfect. I wouldn’t use it for long road trips because it’s not as comfortable and my daughter can’t see out the window, which makes her fussy. The tether strap is a must for safety, but it can be a pain to install in some cars. It’s not FAA approved, so you can’t use it on the plane, but we just gate-check it or carry it in our bag.

We bought the RideSafer Gen 5 in size small (yellow) for our 4.5-year-old who is about 35 lbs. It fits well enough, but the adjustment is a bit finicky. My son says it’s not as comfy as his regular car seat, and he complains about not being able to see out. For short Uber rides, it does the job. I compared it to the Cosco Scenera, and while the RideSafer is way more portable, the Scenera feels safer. The RideSafer is basically a wearable belt positioner. I’d give it a 6/10 for daily use but 9/10 for travel convenience.

One-bag travel with RideSafer vest: packing and usability
I one-bag travel with my 5-year-old and the RideSafer vest (Gen 5 small). It stuffs into a packing cube and weighs almost nothing. For city trips where we use taxis and Ubers, it’s a game changer. The only issue is that in some smaller cars, the belt path was weird and I had to really work to get it tight. Also, the small size fits my daughter perfectly now, but when she was 3.5, it was way too loose even on the smallest setting. I wish the sizing was more consistent. Still, I’d buy it again for the freedom it gives us.

Toddler parent feedback on RideSafer vest and alternatives
We tried the RideSafe vest (I think it’s the Gen 5?) for our 4-year-old. It’s okay. I feel better than just a lap belt, but it’s definitely not a real car seat. My kid doesn’t mind wearing it for short trips, but she slumps over when she sleeps and that scares me. We also tried the BubbleBum booster, but that was a joke for her size—the belt rode up on her neck. The RideSafer at least keeps the lap belt low. For travel, I’d recommend it, but not for everyday.
