We have the Perma child retractable gates on our stairs and while they work great for us, they’re an absolute pain to install and the actual locking part of one broke so we had to order a replacement part. Ive read some negative reviews about them but they’ve worked great for us so far. As I said, the installation was a pain but that’s expected I feel like. We have a bannister on one side and a flat wall on the other so we had to get adapters and it was a pain to ensure spacing and such was correct.

Positive experience with Perma Child Safety retractable gate
We bought the Perma child retractable gate at the top of the stairs for the baby. It's been great. We also bought the pet version for the cats and they can't climb over. It's easy to use and retracts out of the way. Installation was a bit tricky due to the door frame, but we managed. It's sturdy and I recommend it.

We bought a Perma brand retractable gate for the top of the stairs. I really like how it looks, but it's completely worthless as a gate. It was kind of a pain in the butt to install, and the locking mechanism wore out over a few months. Now it just pops out and opens whenever it wants to. It's also sharp on the edges. Waste of money.
