Recommendation for hardware-mounted retractable gate on stairs
We use these ones at the top of our stairs. They came with the house when we bought it, but I think they're Perma Child Safety. You can get them on Amazon. They're like a roller blind, so they don't take up any room when not in use. You have to get the correct installation very plumb or they don't lock open properly. Super convenient.

Mixed experiences with retractable gates including safety concerns
We have a retractable gate (Retract-A-Gate) at the top of our stairs. The fabric kind, that rolls up into a side piece. It works fine but my kids are constantly trying to stick their fingers in the side and I'm worried they'll pinch them. Also, my 2 year old has figured out how to get it open if we don't lock it. No major injuries yet but it's a constant source of anxiety.
