we have one with a base but it just clicks in with latches and can also be used without the base. I loved it. I never bought a second base for my husbands truck because it took literally less than a minute to move from mine to his. Interestingly enough, it didn’t fit my dads car with the base but fit without it.

Recline level indicator inconsistency and installation struggles
With the base, the level indicator is fine on the base itself, which I don't get why they have a level line on the carrier and the base. With the base, you level THAT and then you adjust the recline on the carrier appropriately for the age.

Harness and recline adjustments with the baseless model
The only thing I’ve noticed is that when installed with the rigid LATCH, the harness is really hard to loosen. It’s so stiff! Also, the bubble level seems off compared to the level line on the seat. I ended up using a rolled towel for a better recline.
