The Diono Radian 3R is a 3-in-1 convertible car seat designed for children from birth to 120 lb, offering rear-facing up to 50 lb, forward-facing with harness, and high-back booster modes. Its slim 16.9-inch width enables three-across installation in many vehicles, and the seat folds to an 8-inch depth for travel, with FAA approval for airline use. Key features include an automotive-grade steel core for impact protection, ComfortPlus memory foam padding, and a 10-year lifespan, though users note that the harness straps are closely positioned and installation, particularly rear-facing, can be challenging.

Reddit users appreciate the Diono Radian 3R for its slim design enabling 3-across installs and travel-friendly folding, but frequently complain about difficult installation, lack of newborn support, close harness straps, and rear-facing fit issues in smaller cars.

mixed sentiment100% match

Overall sentiment is mixed, leaning slightly negative due to recurring complaints about installation difficulty, discomfort for children (close harness straps, lack of head support), and rear-facing limitations, though many still recommend it for specific use cases like 3-across setups and travel.

Community Q&A

Can the Diono Radian 3R be used for infants?
No, it is not recommended for infants due to lack of head support and inserts; it's better for toddlers and older children.
Does the Radian 3R fit rear-facing in a small sedan like a Civic?
It often does not fit well rear-facing in smaller cars due to its depth; many users struggle with installation.
Is the Radian 3R good for air travel?
Yes, it is FAA-approved for forward-facing use on planes and folds for easy transport, though it is heavy to carry.

Compared To

vs Clek Fllo/Foonf

Radian 3R is less bulky and has a lower profile, making it easier for kids to climb in and fit 3 across, but lacks the premium feel and ease of use of Clek seats.

vs Graco Extend2Fit

Graco is bulkier but easier to install and more comfortable; Diono is slimmer for 3-across but more difficult to install rear-facing in smaller cars.

  • Long-term durability praised but installation and comfort issues noted

I currently have the 3RXT and have been using it pretty much for the past 7 years. Have two of them. I think 3RXT is now discontinued. Anyone can confirm the width between this 3R and 3RXT are the same? All my kiddos (11, 8, 5) are tall enough for front facing but don't know if these would fit well enough so that the seats aren't difficult. Currently we have two 3RXT on the sides and one Clek Foonf in the middle. That's very car dependent.... totally different if you're trying to fit 3 across in the back of a Toyota Corolla vs a Rav 4 vs Sienna. I have this car seat, and while it's true that it is difficult to install, I really like it. It's easy to get my kid in and out of the seat, there isn't a bunch of things in the way. It's got a good steel frame to it, which apparently not all car seats have. It's all also rated to last 10 years or until your child is 120 lbs, which is past the car seat requirement age of 8 years in Ontario.

  • Installation is a pain but 3-across capability is a major plus, harness straps are an issue

The shoulder straps are strangely close and they can chafe the kids neck. This works for an infant, but you won't really want to use it. This stays strapped into car, little babies are way more fragile and loading them into a carseat is more gentle, precision, indoor type thing. This is a great carseat for kids 30lbs and up, mostly because its built really well. It can also rear/forward. However, the shoulder straps are strangely close and they can chafe the kids neck. Just received mine. Pro’s It’s significantly less bulky than the Clek Fllo it’s replacing. Very easy to fit 3 car seats in my Model Y. Didn’t fit when trying other “slim” car seats. Low profile lower base so it much easier for a kid to climb in by themselves (vs the taller Clek for example) It’s got memory foam, which I assume will be comfortable, despite being very thin. Con’s No head support. The child’s head will fall over when they go to sleep Harness straps are really close together cutting into the kids neck Someone mentioned cup holders are included. I did not have cup holders in either of my 2 car seats.

  • Rear-facing installation in a Civic is problematic, better alternatives exist

It’s definitely not a feature I’d normally look for in a car seat for a Civic, unless there were a confounding situation that would make it worth the extra space. If your child is tall or heavy for his age, you’ll need to be more careful to pick out a seat that will last. Petite kids can have more options that will work. For a Civic, I’d probably look at a Graco Extend2Fit. It’s a bit wide but it’s fairly compact front-to-back and should be a good fit. A downside is that the door opening in a Civic is a little tight and the Graco has kind of high sides which can be annoying until the child can climb in with assistance. On the other hand, with the new side impact standards I’m having a hard time thinking of a current seat that will fit well in a Civic and doesn’t have high sides. Diono is the only one that comes to mind that hasn’t been discontinued yet, but it’s too much of a space hog to use in a side seat in a Civic. It might fit in the center, but the last time I used one in a Civic it was a 2005 model year and the back seats have changed a lot since then so I’m not sure how well it would work. It can be a kinda finicky car seat for installation.

  • Great for travel and forward-facing, but not suitable for infants

We have a Nuna exec at home but we're traveling for the first time with our new diono r3. You need to purchase straps but it can be carried like a backpack. It doesn't fit rear facing in economy on an airplane, but it works rear facing or front facing for cars and it's super easy to install. We like it for what it is. Our big guy fits in it with room to Grow. We have a travel car seat - the diono r3 - and you can buy straps for it that effectively make it into a backpack. We've used it domestically and internationally and it fits on coach seats (front facing) and then you can use it rear facing for the car once you get where you're going. Every time we travel with it, we have parents stopping us and asking about it. Super light weight and easy to use! This is not a seat for infants as it has no head support or inserts, so don't rush buying this for your expecting kiddo.

  • Booster mode lacks adjustable belt guide, but fits 3-across in Honda Prologue

I have the diono 3r, but having some issues. My main issue is the seat belt in my car, a 2024 Honda Pilot, it doesn't want to retract. It's very difficult to get any slack in the belt, making it impossible to install rear facing. I also have an issue where the shoulder belt, when used in booster mode, doesn't rest on the shoulder properly because the belt guide is not adjustable. Has anyone else had this issue and been able to fix it? On the plus side, I can fit 3 across in my Honda Prologue with the Diono 3R in booster mode, which many other seats can't do.
