We have a toddleroo mesh gate (pressure fit) on carpet. I've fallen into it a few times and it held fine. If you tighten it properly it shouldn't go anywhere. Regarding walls they all have the screw in cups for the walls you can use for extra security. I've had friends with toddleroo gates and they all like them. I'm not a fan of the step over bar style either, seems like a trip hazard.

Mixed experience: Toddleroo gate easy to install but easily knocked down by toddler and wall damage from bumpers
We ended up getting a pressure mounted one by North States (Toddleroo maybe?) that goes between the stair rails and the wall. It's super easy to install and take down when we don't need it, but my 2 year old has learned to just push it over. The rubber feet don't leave marks on the wood stairs but it scuffed up the paint on the wall pretty badly.
