The gate itself is a nice, metal construction. It feels solid. It was a nightmare to install, but it works. The biggest problem is (and this is the issue the entire time we've owned it) opening it. It requires two hands, and holding a baby while trying to open this gate at the top of the stairs has been a near-death experience for me more times than I'd like to admit. The latch is absolutely atrocious - it slides instead of lifts, requiring you to pinch a button and pull up on the whole gate. Ours actually sticks so you have to kind of wiggle it while pulling up, which is impossible with one hand. The screws they include are absolutely garbage. The heads strip instantly. The plastic cover of the latch is garbage; the little tab that holds it shut broke off a week in.

Positive experience with Regalo gates at top and bottom of stairs
We've been using a Regalo gate at the top and bottom of the stairs for about 2 years now, and they've held up great. We have them hardware-mounted into the wall and banister. Sure, they're not the fanciest, but they work. We've had no issues with them. I see a lot of hate for them, but for the price, they can't be beat in my opinion.

Regalo not recommended for top of stairs; alternatives suggested
I would not recommend Regalo for top of stairs. I know they say they can be used for top of stairs (at least the metal ones), but they have that bar across the bottom that you have to step over. We have 2 Regalo gates (one is extra wide and tall) for other doorways and they work well. But for the top of the stairs, I would go with the North States gate (around $80 on Amazon). The latch is WAY easier to use. It actually opens with one hand and it's easy to install.

Regalo gate is cheap but latch is terrible for top of stairs
The Regalo gate for top of stairs is bad. The latch is so hard to use with one hand. We ended up leaving it open most of the time because I couldn't open it while holding the baby, which defeats the purpose. Also, installation was awful. We had to shim out the latch side a ton because our baseboards made it sit unevenly. I wish we had just spent more on a gate with a better latch.
