I like the small size

Randall H.

I like the small size and that it has a pocket clip. I don't like that the clip doesn't go to the end of the knife so it doesn't tuck into my pocket. That little bit that sticks out catches on things at times.

Great knife

Jon

This is the perfect small EDC knife and reasonably priced. Easy to sharpen with a stick style sharpener. Easy to get parts when the spring bar wears out to always which to open.

Beautiful knife

I hope Ken Onion/Kershaw took home a bunch of design awards for the Chive. It's an extraordinarily elegant design. Gave mine away in a weak moment and will be replacing it. Maybe a deep clip would improve it, but I usually just drop it in my pocket rather than clipping it. Great on weekends but also carries just fine in suit pants. A thing of beauty.

Finally got one!

My dad has had this knife (1600) since I was a kid, and a couple larger models. I’ve wanted one of my own for over a decade, but never had the extra cash to get one. Finally found one at an estate sale for $5 in perfect condition, and it’s the exact model I wanted. I’m so excited to finally have it, it’s perfect and I love it! Perfect to fit in the tiny pockets women’s clothes are cursed with, clipped inside a boot but small enough you can’t feel it, or inside your purse no matter how small the one you carry is! Long lasting, very sharp, discreet, and perfect for most jobs you need it for. Highly recommend, it’s a great knife to keep on you everyday no matter who you are! Would be a good first knife for an older kid too and an amazing gift for anyone you know that wants a small but useful knife. Impressed with the quality and longevity. I’ve carried a Gerber or two for several years, decent for the affordability but needs to be sharpened often. This knife is obviously higher quality and rarely needs to be resharpened, I’m so glad to have it. I immediately showed my dad and he told me this model is definitely his favorite knife, and he has had/currently has lots of different knives so you know it’s good!

Great knife, just too small for my hand.

Anthony S.

I've only used this knife a few times due to its size. I wouldn't EDC this knife but it could be great for clipping onto your hiking pack, keeping in your car as a backup, or if you have small hands. The blade is sharp and the action is smooth. If you like small knives, this is a great option. I also purchased the Scallion and that has the same profile, just a larger footprint, which worked better for me.

Community Q&A

Is the Chive too small for real use?
It's perfect for light EDC tasks like opening mail and boxes, but not suitable for heavy-duty cutting.
Can you replace the Chive with something similar?
Alternatives like the Spyderco Cricket or Benchmade Mini Griptilian are suggested, but none match the exact form factor.

  • Thoughts on the Kershaw Chive

I love my Chive for office carry. Super sharp out of the box, great little flipper. But the handle is tiny and slippery. Not a heavy duty knife, but for mail and boxes it's great.

  • Replacement for problematic Chive

I have had 2 Chives and both gummed up and stopped flipping. I work in a dusty environment and have to relube often. Looking for something similar size.

  • New Knife Day: Chive 1600

Just got the Chive 1600. It's tiny but fun. The Speedsafe action is addictive. Great for opening boxes and mail, but I wouldn't use it for anything more than light tasks.
