Sturdy gate with tricky latch
I just put up a Regalo one that's extra tall and metal. It was a bit of a pain to put up, but it's sturdy and looks nice. The latch is a little weird at first, but you get used to it. One handed opening is possible but tricky.

Cost-effective top-of-stairs option despite installation woes
We have the Regalo extra tall hardware mounted gate at the top of our stairs. It's holding up great so far. Installation was a pain—the instructions aren't great and the latch needed adjusting. But once it's in, it's very solid and much cheaper than other options. However, the latch can be hard to do with one hand, and the door only swings one way (into the hallway) which is a bit annoying.

Solid budget choice but not the best
I've had a couple Regalo gates. They're cheap and they get the job done. Had one at the top of the stairs, hardware mounted. It was solid. The plastic parts feel a bit cheap but hey, it's low cost. KidCo gates are better but pricier. If you need a basic gate, Regalo is fine.
