Community Q&A

Is the RideSafer Travel Vest as safe as a forward-facing car seat?
It meets federal safety standards and passes crash testing, but some CPSTs and parents are cautious, especially without the tether.
Can I use the RideSafer vest for a 2 or 3-year-old?
Technically yes for some sizes, but most commenters and CPSTs recommend waiting until at least 4 or 5 due to maturity and fit concerns.
Is the top tether necessary?
It's strongly recommended for younger children to prevent excessive movement, but not all vehicles have tether anchors.

Compared To

vs Traditional forward-facing harnessed car seat

The vest is seen as more portable but potentially less safe without the tether; some parents opt for a lightweight travel car seat instead for peace of mind.

vs Cosco Scenera Next

Mentioned as a common lightweight travel car seat alternative, especially for rear-facing children.

vs WayB Pico

The Pico is another travel option but is heavier and bulkier than the vest.

vs Immi Go

Similar concept to the RideSafer but requires a tether anchor, limiting its use in some vehicles.

  • Safety comparison of RideSafer Travel Vest to forward-facing car seat

The conclusion I drew from this is that while the travel vest DOES meet the same safety requirements as the forward facing seat as long as the top tether is attached, some may argue it's not quite as safe. She puts it through the same testing as a forward facing harness, and crash testing shows that when used appropriately with the tether, the load on the chest and head are similar.

  • RideSafer vest for travel with a 3-year-old

I just used the travel vest for my 3 year old this past weekend. It was definitely nice not to have to lug a car seat through the airport, and the vest folds up into a small bag that fit in my diaper bag. Setup was a bit finicky but got easier the more I did it. I definitely would not feel safe with a 3 year old in it as the primary restraint unless they are very calm and compliant.

  • RideSafer Travel Vest for one-bag travel

I have the RideSafer vest and have used it several times on trips where we used taxis or rental cars. The small size fits into a backpack easily. It’s great for our needs. I will say I wouldn’t use it for a kid younger than 4.5 and it can be a bit finicky to set up, but once you get the hang of it, it’s not too bad. I also have the WayB Pico but the vest is way more portable.

  • Ride Safe vest for a 4-year-old

We have this for our 4.5 year old and it's been a game changer for travel. I've seen a lot of comments saying not for 3, maybe for 4. So at 4 we started using it but only for short trips. She's a calm kid in the car and we felt comfortable. Honestly, I wouldn’t have felt great using it much younger than 4.

  • Ride Safer vest for a 3-year-old - mixed opinions

I've been looking into this for my 3 year old and I just can't bring myself to do it. Even though the manufacturer says 30 lbs and 3 years, most CPSTs say 4 or 5. Toddlers just don't have the impulse control to stay in position. I'd rather lug a car seat than risk it.
