The Diono Radian 3R All-in-One Convertible Car Seat is a multi-mode car seat designed for children from birth to booster (5–120 lbs), offering rear-facing up to 50 lbs, forward-facing up to 65 lbs, and booster mode. Its slim 17-inch width enables three-across seating in most vehicles, and it features an automotive-grade steel frame with ComfortPlus memory foam padding. However, Consumer Reports crash tests have shown significant shell cracking in rear-facing tests, and installation can be difficult without additional support, with users also noting the harness requires rethreading for height adjustments.

  • Diono Radian 3R as a long-lasting, space-saving travel solution

We have a Nuna exec at home but we're traveling for the first time with our new diono r3. You need to purchase straps but it can be carried like a backpack. It doesn't fit rear facing in economy on an airplane, but it works rear facing or front facing for cars and it's super easy to install. We like it for what it is. Our big guy fits in it with room to grow. / We have a travel car seat - the diono r3 - and you can buy straps for it that effectively make it into a backpack... Every time we travel with it, we have parents stopping us and asking about it. Super light weight and easy to use! / I have 3 across, using the Diono 3R car seats, all fit perfectly.

  • Concerns over crash test safety and rear-facing failure

The Diono Radian 3R seat is cumbersome to use and requires extra steps, parts, and tools to make adjustments. Its main benefit is its narrow width provides the potential to fit three car seats across the backseat. As part of Consumer Reports’ car seat evaluation program, CR conducts its own simulated frontal crash tests. In 2 of 2 rear-facing tests with the CRABI 12-month-old dummy installed with lower anchors, there was significant cracking in the shell from the rear to front. In 1 of 1 rear-facing tests with the CRABI 12-month-old dummy installed with the 3pt belt, there was cracking from the rear of the shell to near the crotch buckle slots... there is concern that the seat should not have such large cracking with the smallest dummy size (12-month CRABI) that it is intended for.

  • User frustration with rear-facing installation and safety doubts

Very unhappy with Diono car seat as rear facing. Installation is next to impossible in some cars without a pool noodle or rolled towel, and the seat still doesn't feel secure. After reading about crash test results, I can't justify using this seat for my child.

  • Advice against Diono for Civic due to space and installation issues

For a Civic, I’d probably look at a Graco Extend2Fit. It’s a bit wide but it’s fairly compact front-to-back and should be a good fit... Diono is the only one that comes to mind that hasn’t been discontinued yet, but it’s too much of a space hog to use in a side seat in a Civic. It might fit in the center, but the last time I used one in a Civic it was a 2005 model year and the back seats have changed a lot since then so I’m not sure how well it would work. It can be a kinda finicky car seat for installation.

  • Mixed opinions on longevity and rear-facing limits

We've had the Diono Radian for a few years now. It's held up well and the steel frame feels solid. The 50lb rear-facing limit is great, but re-threading the harness when you need to adjust is a pain. Also, it's not the most comfortable for long trips according to my kid.
