Reddit Insights

Redditors are mixed: many praise the Lovevery play gym for design, developmental guidance and its tent/versatility, but many call it overpriced, bulky and say simpler options (notably the Fisher‑Price kick-and-play piano) often engage babies more.

mixed sentiment100% match

Discussion highlights both clear positives (aesthetics, play guidance, convertible tent/versatility) and consistent negatives (high retail price, bulk, some babies prefer Fisher‑Price piano mats). Multiple commenters recommend buying used rather than new (see evidence refs).

Use Cases

  • Newborn 'looker' phase / tummy time / eye-tracking using high-contrast cards
  • Converting the gym into a tent/fort for older babies (peek‑a‑boo, ongoing play)
  • Using alongside or instead of a piano mat (many households keep both; piano detaches and is used separately)
  • Buying used / thrifted unit to test whether baby likes it

Watch Out For

highHigh retail price — many suggest secondhand instead
mediumLarge / bulky — can impede rolling/crawling and be awkward to store
mediumNot every baby finds it engaging — some prefer the Fisher‑Price piano or simpler mats
lowValue is partly aesthetic/marketing — adults often like the look even if babies don't prefer it

Community Q&A

Is the Lovevery play gym worth buying new?
Mixed — parents like its design and play guidance, but many say it's overpriced at retail and recommend buying used or choosing a Fisher‑Price piano mat if you want high engagement.
How long will a baby use it?
Typically most useful in the early months (looker/tummy-time stages) but some families convert it to a tent/fort to extend play; usefulness varies by baby.
Should I get the Fisher‑Price piano instead?
If you want maximum immediate engagement and a toy that often lasts longer, many recommend the Fisher‑Price kick‑and‑play piano; others buy both for different uses.
Is buying used a reasonable option?
Yes — multiple commenters recommend finding one secondhand to test whether your baby likes it and to avoid the high retail price.
Will it take up a lot of space / be inconvenient?
Many mention it's bulkier than a piano mat and can get in the way once baby is rolling/crawling; consider space before buying.

Compared To

vs Fisher‑Price kick-and-play piano mat

Many commenters say the Fisher‑Price piano is more immediately engaging and lasts longer as a toy (keys detach/use separately), while Lovevery is praised for aesthetics and developmental guidance; some recommend both if possible.

vs Cheaper/generic playmats (Skip Hop, Baby Einstein, thrifted mats)

Several users report that cheaper mats entertain babies adequately and suggest buying used rather than paying Lovevery retail; Lovevery's premium is often framed as aesthetics and curated play guidance.

  • Gifted user: enjoyed gym, tent cover, seen on FB Marketplace

I guess I’m one of the dissenting voices here, but we were gifted one and love it! I think it’s a little steep at retail, but I’ve seen them floating around fb marketplace for $50-$100. We had both the Lovevery gym and Fisher Price piano mat. He’s 14mo and still occasionally plays with the piano (we put the rest of the setup away around 7mo when he started crawling). But he still loves the Lovevery gym specifically with the little tent cover, walking/running around it and playing peek-a-boo. If you have the space, I’d say it’s worth it.

  • Used purchase: liked the look and tent conversion

I got a used one and my baby loves it. It also doesn't look bad in the home, like someone else said. The fact that it converts into a cute little tent for when baby is older is definitely a plus.

  • Detailed: play guide, configuring for 12-week developmental work

It comes with a play guide for what to do and how to “configure” it based on your child’s age. At 12 weeks they are still in the “looker” phase so you would clip the included high contrast images on the wooden pegs. Supposedly this helps with eye development and overall focus. You would even do this at different angles to get your child to start stretching their neck muscles. At 12 weeks you could probably even go straight into the more complex high contrast cards they include. And you would set the rattle bell on the lower rung to get your LO to practice their kicking. This would probably come naturally since a lot of their kicks are more reflex based at 12 weeks, but has the effect of strengthening their core and legs, while also introducing cause and effect. Their eyes will be drawn to the high contrast hanging ball. Which you can lightly tap so they can practice eye tracking. Or just give them something to start at and help focus their eyes. One of the flaps is of crinkle material, which you can put their feet in front of and then angle up the paper and have them kick it, teaching cause and effect and strengthens their core and legs. That’s just at 12 weeks… So yea, I’ve been getting my moneys worth. I have also bought some additional hanging toys from Lamaze (Captain Calamari anyone?) which she lovessss. You’ll see a lot of other people do the same with the additional hanging toys. Definitely not necessary, but it’s fun to experiment and sort of “make it your own”. Edit: Forgot to add. You can put the high contrast images in the “learn to focus” flap to give them something to look at while on their tummy. Same thing for the mirror cards. The point is that it’s something that “distracts” them while on their tummy, since most kids take a bit to really start being comfortable on their tummy for long periods. Ours is 4months and absolutely hated tummy time at first. Now she loves it.

  • Had both: play gym versatile across stages, piano also useful

We got the lovevery play gym gifted to us, and I thrifted the fisher price play mat. If it’s in your budget, I’d defs recommend getting both! They serve different needs and provide different play opportunities. My baby at 7mo has loved both since the newborn stage, but if I had to choose one I’d say the play gym has been more versatile across the stages of development (even though the piano mat is also amazing and can also grow with the baby!)

  • Loved it but bulky and obstructed rolling/crawling — consider used

I have it and love it, but Idk if I’d get it this late in the game. My little one is 6m.o and finally starting to interact with the play zones on the mat, but it simultaneously just gets in the way of his rolling and crawling. In short- depends on the baby but you’ll be fine without it. I looked for a second hand mat at first so that’s an option too.
