I have a COMOMY retractable gate at the top of my stairs and it's been great. It disappears when not in use and my toddler can't figure out the double lock. The lock is a little finicky sometimes and you have to push/pull just right, but overall I'd recommend it.

We have a retractable one (not COMOMY but similar) and we love that it doesn't take up space. However, our dog managed to chew through the mesh, so I'd be cautious with pets. For just baby-proofing it's been fine.
