The RideSafer Gen 5 Extra Small Portable Car Seat (XS - Blue) is a vest-type child restraint system certified to FMVSS 213 for use in motor vehicles. It is designed as a portable alternative to traditional car seats, ideal for travel, ridesharing, taxis, rental cars, and three-across seating. The XS size fits children approximately 2 years and older weighing 26.5–40 lb (pre–Dec 5, 2024 units min 22 lb) and measuring 30–45 in tall; it can be used with a lap belt and top tether or with a lap/shoulder belt (with or without tether). Reddit considers the RideSafer Gen 5 travel vest a convenient, safe portable car seat for travel but emphasizes it's best for children 4+ who can sit still, with the Extra Small size allowing use from age 2 but rear-facing still recommended.

mixed sentiment100% match

Overall sentiment is cautiously positive. Parents appreciate its portability and safety for travel, but express concerns about fit for younger children, slouching, and learning curve. Some older threads question certification, but recent confirmation of FMVSS compliance alleviates most doubts.

lowSizing requires buying next size up as child grows; may not be cost-effective long-term.

Community Q&A

Is the RideSafer Gen 5 still certified and safe?
Yes, it meets FMVSS 213 and is crash tested; some copies (like WhizRider) are not certified.
Can it be used on airplanes?
Not currently FAA approved, but manufacturer hopes for future approval; use a conventional car seat on plane.
At what age can I start using the Extra Small size?
The XS is rated from age 2 (22-40 lbs), but CPSTs recommend waiting until 4-5 unless necessary; rear-facing is safest for toddlers.

Compared To

vs WhizRider

WhizRider was found to lack proper FMVSS certification, making RideSafer the safer, certified choice.

vs Traditional forward-facing harness seats

RideSafer is more portable but less foolproof; traditional seats are safer for younger or less compliant children.

  • RideSafer travel vest Gen 5 Still Certified and Safe?

The RSTV is certified and safe to use for children over about 4 years of age who get a proper fit. The WhizRider claimed to be certified but in fact never complied with FMVSS 213. There are regulatory challenges that mean that no, the RSTV can't currently be used on a plane, though we hope it may be soon.

  • RideSafer Travel Vest Review by CPST

The RideSafer Travel Vest is a compact and lightweight child restraint system... Unlike traditional booster seats, it’s worn like a vest... The manufacturer has approved use as young as two years old but as CPSTs, we recommend waiting until they are five. The biggest issue is that young kids don’t always want to sit upright... A big tip to solve this is having them sit with their legs folded (crisscross apple sauce).

  • RideSafer Delight Gen5 Review - Car Seats For The Littles

The RideSafer Gen5 combines some of the best features from the previous versions in an updated form that’s even smaller and lighter... We have some concerns about the XS... it’s not our first choice for restraints for a child who is that small... but we do understand that families who ride in taxis a lot or travel internationally are using them... Our Gen5 included many of the optional accessories, including the top tether... The RideSafer Gen5 includes the latest and greatest version of the buckle.

  • RideSafer Product Page and FAQs

Extra Small size RideSafer Travel Vest: For this age of child, rear-facing is the safest option. We would only recommend using an XS RideSafer vest for special situations such as for travel or taxis/ride shares. Ideally an adult will sit next to the child to help keep the child in proper position. (The XS is designed for use by very slim 2-year-olds or very slim 3- to, maybe, 4-year-old children. Most 3- and 4-year-olds will fit best in a small size vest.)

  • RideSafer FAQs on Sizing and Safety

The Extra Small size is new (2022). The manufacturer crash tested it for use with younger children, starting at age 2... The safest option for an 2-year-old is to use a rear-facing car seat. We realize while traveling this can be very inconvenient... Gen 5 vests: manufactured May 2023 and later have a 5 year expiration date from the date of purchase.
