The front rail does come off, and there is a toddler rail you can buy, however, it is more of just a partial rail. It doesn't extend far enough to prevent falls. I would recommend a cheap mesh bed rail instead. Way cheaper and works with any bed.

I bought the toddler rail and returned it. For barely $30 more I converted the crib to a full-size bed and bought a cheap mesh bed rail on Amazon. The toddler rail is a total rip-off.

Single piece of wood sold for $80
I can't believe this single piece of wood is $80. It's maybe 2 feet long and doesn't even keep my kid in bed. He fell out three times the first night. I took it off and just put the mattress on the floor. It's a joke.
