Compared To
vs Mark Lewisohn's Tune In
Tune In is praised for depth but ends just as the group gets famous; Anthology is less detailed but covers the entire story from the band's perspective.
vs Bob Spitz's The Beatles: The Biography
Spitz is a solid narrative biography but not as essential as Anthology's firsthand account.
vs Philip Norman's Shout!
Shout! is suggested but seen as dated; Anthology is preferred as the band's own story.

Disappointment with Tune In leads to Anthology endorsement
There is a massive chorus of people on this sub [who] say that The Beatles Anthology is the best Beatles book ever written. I would say that Tune In is amazing and arguably better, but I would also say that The Beatles Anthology is the ONLY essential Beatles book. The rest are just nice to have. The Anthology is the one single book I'd recommend to someone who is just getting into The Beatles. It tells the story extremely well and the pictures are amazing. Be warned: it's HUGE and weighs a ton.

Anthology recommended as a comprehensive gift
If you could only afford one Beatles book, it's hard to beat The Beatles Anthology. It's BIG and HEAVY. Hundreds of great photos, includes dialog from all four Beatles, and covers everything from birth to the end. Lots of insider perspectives from people in their circle, which separates it from all the other biographies. You could spend hours looking at the pictures and have a great time.

Worth buying for pictures and direct quotes
Is it worth buying for £20? YES. The book is massive. It has a TON of pictures (most I've never seen), and everything is explained by the band themselves. It's essentially their autobiography in coffee table format. Definitely get it.

Anthology tops best books list
Most people agree The Beatles Anthology is the gold standard for Beatles literature. It's an oral history filled with pictures, and it's all from the Beatles themselves. Nothing else compares to hearing everything from them. There are many great Beatles books. My favorite is Tune In by Mark Lewisohn. It's incredibly in-depth but only goes up to 1962. And then you have Spitz's biography and Hunter Davies' authorized biography. But I'd say The Anthology is the definitive Beatles book.

Clear recommendation for new fans
Yes buy it. You will not regret it. Best book for new fans. It really digs into the timeline and has candid quotes from the guys as well as plenty of pictures. Reading through it is like a giant scrapbook straight from their mouths.

Anthology deemed the only essential book
Without a doubt: The Anthology. Not only is it the only book I've been able to reread any number of times, but it's also the only one that's truly essential. It's a beautiful book that you can easily open to any page and just admire. I have probably 30 or so Beatle books, and I'd trade all but the Anthology for a cup of coffee. That's not to say other books aren't great or interesting, but if I could only keep a single book, it would be The Anthology.
