I’m trying to understand what level of safety the RSTV provides. Everything I’ve read says it’s the next best thing to a FF harness seat – it’s a type of harness system, superior to a belt-positioning booster because of the tether and how the belt is routed... But reading the official site page, it says it meets FMVSS 213, like any US car seat. Yet calling Safe in the Seat, they say they do not consider it a harness alternative for an everyday seat. It excels as a travel harness seat for vacations where you’d otherwise be using a belt positioning booster.

RideSafer vest for travel with 3yo?
The manufacturer says 3 and 30 lbs, but many experts say it's best for kids 4+. I used it with my 3.5 year old who was 30 lbs and it was fine, but he is an extremely compliant kid. If your daughter fights the car seat, it might be a battle. I would practice at home first. We bought the small because it has a broader weight range and she'll fit it later too, but you might consider the XS if she's petite. Also, don't forget the top tether.

I've used it in Ubers and it's great. I keep it in the included bag under the stroller. The drivers have always been fine with it, sometimes curious. It does take a couple minutes to get the belt threaded, but it's not bad. I always use the top tether if the car has anchors. My kid is 5 and 40 lbs and we have the small.

I one-bag travel with my 5 year old and the RideSafer vest is a game-changer. It rolls up small and fits in my 26L pack. We use it for taxis and rental cars. We used the Gen 5 small for our 4.5 year old who is around 35 lbs and 41 inches. It fits well but it does take some practice to get the belt right. One thing to note – if your child falls asleep they can slump forward even with the tether, but it's still better than a booster. I wouldn't use it for everyday, but for occasional travel it's perfect.
