Just gonna give you my review: I live in a dry climate and the Newton has been so ideal. My baby was a tummy sleeper and we couldn't sleep at night knowing he was laying there face down on his plasticky-waterproof toddler mattress. So I ordered the Newton. The cover it comes with is fully breathable. Like it's hard to imagine until you get it and smash your face against it and breathe freely. It's firm and doesn't sink in the middle at all the way the regular toddler mattress did (ours was tempurpedic but not sure how old it was). Also loved that the Newton didn't crinkle with every little movement, my baby seemed to sleep better immediately. He sleeps warm and the airflow of the mattress was great, he's only occasionally sweaty now instead of always sweaty. As far as cleaning it, we've had some normal accidents like a leaky diaper or whatever, but I have yet to find urine soaked past the cover. The sheets and cover seem to absorb enough that it doesn't go into the mattress at all. I think I rinsed it once the first time my baby peed on the bed, but it wasn't even damp nor could I smell urine so I didn't use soap and it still has never smelled like urine. I'd probably use Dr.Bronners or dish soap if I had to, but a tiny baby likely won't soak through to the mattress, and the soap isn't going to be on the baby's skin so I don't think you need to worry about what's baby safe.

Firsthand experience using Newton mattress for face-smushing toddler
So I have the Newton “breathable” mattress for my son… it’s a very good mattress. Comfortable. He smushes his face in it every night, we’ve never had any issues and he’s almost 2 years old. I know it’s pricey but I don’t mind paying up for good quality, which I think it is. I put “breathable” in air quotes bc I don’t really know what that means, but considering my own experience w my son smushing his face in it every night and being totally fine I’d say probably it is pretty breathable. It’s not incased in plastic at least, that sounds pretty dangerous.

Tip to buy used Newton mattress for washability benefit
Highly suggest looking at Facebook marketplace for a Newton if you’re looking for the benefits (hello washable cover AND mattress - the breathable thing is just a neat perk I guess) without the price tag. I just bought one last week that looks BRAND NEW for $40. It’ll get disinfected and cleaned anyway before baby is here, but don’t be afraid to buy “nice” things secondhand.

Thank you for this! Just switched out my registry. Honestly one of the biggest selling points on Newton was the ‘shower off the whole mattress’ feature, which Halo does too. It was even more intriguing than “breathable” (which is great but I get isn’t backed in any way.)

Long-term user recommendation highlighting washability and longevity
We have a Newton mattress. My son is 3.5 and he still uses it. So easy to wash, I never had to worry about it being clean after the many overnight accidents we have had. It is a firm mattress which is good for babies. We also bought an extra cover for it and both the mattress and the covers look almost brand new. We are now expecting our second child and once the baby is born, we will get my eldest a twin sized bed and use the Newton for the baby. At this rate, I will have used it for about 8 years at least. It was pricey but I don’t regret purchasing it.
